Two Debates Scheduled in Democratic Primary for New York Governor

At least two debates will be held ahead of the June primary election between Democrats running to be their party’s nominee for governor, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s campaign confirmed Wednesday.

Hochul said she’ll participate in two debates in New York City with her two primary opponents: Rep. Tom Suozzi and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

The first debate will be held on June 7, and broadcast on CBS New York and WCBS Newsradio880.

The second debate will be held on June 16 and broadcast on NBC New York and Telemundo 47. It’s also sponsored by the Albany Times Union.

“I’m eager to participate in these debates to highlight our strong track record of getting things done for New Yorkers,” Hochul said.

Suozzi and Williams were seeking to participate in a minimum of six debates with Hochul before the primary, which is scheduled for June 28. That doesn’t look likely, as of now.

Williams was critical of Hochul for not agreeing to more debates, calling it an “aversion to transparency.”

“While I’m grateful to WCBS and WNBC/Telemundo for hosting debates, the Governor’s refusal to accept additional invitations demonstrates an aversion to transparency and an unwillingness to speak openly about her own record,” Williams said.
