Bronx State Senator Jeff Klein is in a unique spot in state government. The lawmaker heads up the Independent Democratic Conference, a breakaway group of four that left the traditional Democratic Conference in 2011 after some internal squabbling. After the 2012 elections ,with the Republicans lacking the 32 members to lead the chamber, the conference joined up with the IDC to co-govern the senate.
Klein is the co-majority leader along with Long Island Republican Dean Skelos. They each take turns running the chamber on a bi-weekly basis. This week in a far-ranging interview, Klein compares the universal pre-k proposals of Governor Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and talks about what the future holds for the Independent Democratic Conference.
