She's running.
Actress and progressive activist Cynthia Nixon confirmed what has been rumored about for weeks: She is challenging Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. She released this introductory campaign video Monday afternoon.
The mountain will be steep for Nixon as Cuomo has over $30 million in his campaign war-chest and according to a new Siena College Institute poll would easily defeat her in a head-to-head matchup. However, with his former aide Joe Percoco getting convicted in federal court last week and his problem satisfying the more liberal wing of his party, Cuomo could be seen as vulnerable come September.
It wasn't that long ago, though, when Nixon was praising the work of the governor. In this clip from a June 2013 episode of our program, she proudly called Cuomo "progressive" and forward-thinking."
Zephyr Teachout, who primaried Cuomo in 2014, is a part of Nixon's campaign team. The Democratic primary is in September.
