Just in time for the fall foliage season, New York NOW goes on the road to the Adirondack State Park to highlight two big issues facing the area right now.
First off, we examine the Remsen-Lake Placid Rail Corridor. Opinion is split on what to do with the historic 119 mile line that runs through the forest preserve. An 81 mile stretch through the most remote part of the park has been dormant for decades. A group led by the Adirondack Recreational Trail Advocates wants that stretch to be made into a multi-use recreational trail for snowmobiles, bikers and hikers. The Adirondack Preservation Society, which runs the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, wants to restore the full line to its former glory. We travel from Utica to Old Forge and to the most remote parts of the line to bring you the full story.
Also, there are two ballot measures you'll be voting on this year that involve the ADKs. Last month we told you about Proposition 5, a potential land swap between a Lewis mining company and the state. This week we examine Proposition 4, another land swap. This one, between the state and residents around Raquette Lake, is bit more convoluted. For over 1oo years there has been a clouded title issue involving parcels in what is called Township 40. We explain how that could be potentially cleared up on Election Day.Â
