Betty A. Rosa will step in as the interim commission of the state Education Department, the agency announced Tuesday, meaning she’ll vacate her current role as chancellor of the state Board of Regents.

Rosa has spent the last four years at the helm of the Board of Regents, the state’s governing body for education. She’s served on the board since 2008.

“Districts and schools are about to begin an instructional year like no other in our history.” Rosa said. “It is imperative that the Department continues its important work without interruption, and I am dedicated to providing that constancy as Interim Commissioner.”

The role was left open when Interim Education Commissioner Shannon Tahoe decided to step down from the position this month. The Board of Regents is still seeking a permanent replacement for former Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, who left the department earlier this year.

Vice Chancellor Andrew Brown will step in as presiding officer of the Board of Regents until a new chancellor is elected.
