34 years ago this month Mario Cuomo was sworn-in as New York's 52nd Governor. Barely a week into his first term he was faced with an immediate crisis.

Prisoners at the infamous Sing Sing prison in Westchester County had taken 19 guards hostage and for the next 52 hours the state held its breath and hoped the result of the ordeal wouldn't be "another Attica." Veteran reporter Joe Mahoney, who covered the drama for the Times Union, looks back with us on what became a national story in the winter of 1983.
