An upstate school's decision to change what it believed was its offensive nickname for their sports teams drew the attention of the Oneida Nation and they thanked them for it on May 15.
Ray Halbritter, the CEO of Oneida Indian Enterprises, presented the Cooperstown Central School District a check for $10,000 in appreciation for them dropping the moniker 'Redskins.' The money will be used to help offset the cost for new uniforms come July 1 when the school will take on the name 'Hawkeyes.'
Students approached the school leaders late last year and the Board of Education voted to change the name at their last meeting. Watch the full story above.
